Dealing with Online Scams and Fraud
If you’ve been a victim of some type of online scam or fraud, you may be very upset, frustrated, and angry at the scammers for taking your money. There are ways to investigate, look at recovery, conduct an investigation, or prosecute, and we’ve talked about that before. The link below will tell you some of those methods. Here’s one way not to try to get your money back. This was a guy who happened to be in India. He was arrested. He was a victim because he went and kidnapped employees of the platform where he lost his money to try to get his money back.
Consequences of Extreme Actions
India’s law enforcement arrested a man suspected of kidnapping two people connected to a Ponzi scheme in an attempt to recover his investment. This person lost money investing in digital currency, which was likely a Ponzi scheme. In order to recover his investment, the person, along with accomplices, kidnapped two employees and tried to extort Bitcoin from them. So, yeah, if you’re a victim of a scam, fraud, or crime, it’s bad news.
The Risks of Letting Emotions Take Over
When you lose money, you want to get it back. It may be a life-altering event — perhaps your retirement or life savings. It’s frustrating, but don’t let your anger, frustration, or emotions make you do something reckless, like trying to kidnap someone. We’ve seen cases where victims have tried to shoot the scammers. You don’t want to do that. Don’t let it ruin your life. There are legal methods to recover funds from a scam or fraud.
Legal Methods Over Illegal Actions
There are legal ways to do this. If you try something illegal, even in the best-case scenario, if you’re not arrested, your action might prevent you from ever getting your money back. For example, we talked to a victim, along with law enforcement they were working with, who lost money in a Ponzi scheme. It wasn’t a Bitcoin Ponzi scheme; it was a real estate Ponzi scheme. Local law enforcement, the district attorney, and the state police were working on the case to recover the money. We were also conducting investigations to gather evidence for the government agency.
Consequences of Threatening Scammers
In the middle of the case, the victim started sending death threats and threatening messages to the scammers. Because of this, the government dropped his case, even though they knew he was in the right. They knew he had lost money to scammers, but the fact that he made death threats meant he could no longer be a valid witness in the case. If they prosecuted the scammers and brought them to court, the scammer could argue that the victim, who made threats, wasn’t credible, and the case would likely be lost.
Don’t Jeopardize Your Case
So, don’t do anything stupid. Don’t make threats or take actions that could be problematic, because it could result in not only losing your money but also your freedom. Even though this person got lucky and wasn’t prosecuted, the victim who made death threats could have been arrested for committing a crime. This is how not to do it. There are many ways to pursue an investigation to get your money back, but making threats or trying to kidnap someone is definitely not the way to go.
