Understanding Vehicle Telematics
Here’s another example of what we’ve talked about before, which is called vehicle telematics. Vehicle telematics is kind of like a black box on an airplane in a vehicle. Every vehicle has computers which track many pieces of data: the speed of the vehicle moving, what gear it’s in, are the signals on, is there somebody in the passenger seat, are seat belts connected? And depending on the vehicle, there may be a huge amount of records that’s available from inside the vehicle. Many vehicles now also communicate.

Data Transmission via Wi-Fi or 5G
Many vehicles now also communicate outside using Wi-Fi or 5G. This data goes to the manufacturer or to other monitoring. If you have a case, that would be good to know what’s going on with the vehicle. What location was it located in? How many people were in the vehicle? How many doors were opened? When it stopped, were the lights on? Telematics can give you those answers. This is an article about the tragic truck explosion that happened in Las Vegas a few weeks ago and how a lot of the records came from telematics on that vehicle. And they got it pretty quickly.

Accessing Telematics Data
Because the police went in and they downloaded it, but even in the private sector, you may be able to access those.

Telematics Data in Investigations
Back to your reading. Records for a fraud case, a divorce case, asset recovery, hiding activities, illegal activities. So, think about the subject that you’re interested in. Think about what information would be helpful for you to know that would come from the vehicle. Where it was located, when it was turned on, how far did it drive, did it stop for gas, was there somebody in the passenger seat? And you might say, well, how would you know that? Well, think about when you get that notice on your dashboard about the airbags. The airbag does not become active in a vehicle unless somebody’s sitting in that seat, so there has to be a sensor. That data is recorded. The data of what doors are opened. So, you can say, well, somebody was in the passenger seat, and when it stopped at the hotel, both doors opened.

Extracting and Analyzing Telematics Data
So, there’s a lot of records that you can get from vehicle telematics if you know how to extract it, how to review it, how to analyze it, and how to put it into intelligence that will give you answers to questions you might want to know.
